IEX Cloud Shut Down: Best IEX Cloud Alternative and Migration Guide (2026)
If you still have code calling cloud.iexapis.com, it has been failing for a long time. IEX Cloud was discontinued on August 31, 2024. This guide explains what happened, answers the "is IEX Cloud back in 2026?" question, and shows how to port an IEX Cloud app to a working stock data API in an afternoon.
What happened to IEX Cloud?
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| May 31, 2024 | IEX Group announces it will retire all IEX Cloud products |
| August 31, 2024 | IEX Cloud API is switched off |
| 2025-2026 | No relaunch - existing tokens and endpoints remain dead |
IEX Cloud was the developer data platform. IEX Exchange, the stock exchange, keeps operating with its own exchange feeds - but those are not a drop-in replacement for the IEX Cloud REST API most apps used.
What did IEX Cloud users actually rely on?
Most IEX Cloud integrations used a handful of endpoints:
/stock/{symbol}/quote- real-time or delayed quote/stock/{symbol}/chart/{range}- daily history/stock/{symbol}/intraday-prices- minute bars/stock/{symbol}/book- order book/ref-data/symbols- the ticker universe- SSE streaming for live prices
A good IEX Cloud alternative needs to cover these, ideally with a similar JSON style so the migration is mostly search-and-replace.
IEX Cloud to iTick endpoint mapping
iTick covers each of these use cases and adds Hong Kong, China A-shares, forex and crypto on the same token.
| IEX Cloud | iTick | Notes |
|---|---|---|
/stock/{symbol}/quote | /stock/quote?region=US&code={symbol} | Real-time quote |
/stock/{symbol}/chart/{range} | /stock/kline?kType=8 (daily), 9 (weekly), 10 (monthly) | OHLCV bars |
/stock/{symbol}/intraday-prices | /stock/kline?kType=1 ... 7 | 1 minute to 4 hour bars |
/stock/{symbol}/book | /stock/depth | Level 2 order book |
/ref-data/symbols | /symbol/list?type=stock®ion=US | Ticker list |
| SSE streaming | wss://api.itick.org/stock | Subscribe to quote, tick, depth |
Migration code (Python)
import requests
H = {"accept": "application/json", "token": "YOUR_ITICK_TOKEN"}
BASE = "https://api.itick.org"
# IEX Cloud: /stable/stock/AAPL/quote
quote = requests.get(f"{BASE}/stock/quote",
params={"region": "US", "code": "AAPL"}, headers=H).json()["data"]
print(quote["ld"]) # last price
# IEX Cloud: /stable/stock/AAPL/chart/1y -> daily bars
daily = requests.get(f"{BASE}/stock/kline",
params={"region": "US", "code": "AAPL", "kType": 8, "limit": 260},
headers=H).json()["data"]
# IEX Cloud: /stable/stock/AAPL/intraday-prices -> 1-minute bars
intraday = requests.get(f"{BASE}/stock/kline",
params={"region": "US", "code": "AAPL", "kType": 1, "limit": 390},
headers=H).json()["data"]
# IEX Cloud: /stable/stock/AAPL/book -> order book
book = requests.get(f"{BASE}/stock/depth",
params={"region": "US", "code": "AAPL"}, headers=H).json()["data"]
Three things change: the base URL, a region parameter (so the same code works for HK or SH), and the token moves from the query string to a request header.
Replacing IEX Cloud SSE streaming with WebSocket
import json, websocket # pip install websocket-client
def on_open(ws):
ws.send(json.dumps({"ac": "subscribe",
"params": "AAPL$US,MSFT$US,SPY$US",
"types": "quote,tick,depth"}))
ws = websocket.WebSocketApp("wss://api.itick.org/stock",
header={"token": "YOUR_ITICK_TOKEN"},
on_open=on_open,
on_message=lambda ws, m: print(json.loads(m)))
ws.run_forever(ping_interval=20)
If you are new to streaming, read WebSocket vs REST for market data.
How to choose an IEX Cloud replacement
- Need deep US fundamentals, estimates and alternative data? Look at providers built around fundamentals.
- Need prices - quotes, bars, ticks and depth, in real time? Choose a market data API with WebSocket streaming such as the iTick market data feed.
- Need markets outside the US? Check Hong Kong, A-share, forex and crypto coverage before you migrate, so you only migrate once.
- Budget: iTick has a free plan (5 REST calls per minute plus WebSocket) to port and test, and paid plans from $99 per month.
